US to Georgia aid package announced

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has announced a US$1 billion aid package for Georgia.

To help Georgia after its conflict with Russia, Ms Rice said most of the money would be delivered before the end of the year.

She said the money would assist in resolving Georgia's pressing humanitarian needs and facilitate its economic reconstruction.

She insisted the aid would be for civilian purposes only

Washington has already provided roughly US$30 million in emergency humanitarian aid to the former Soviet republic since the conflict flared up in early August.
