American actor-turned-director and screenwriter Sean Penn, who heads this year's Cannes Film Festival jury, has lashed out at US President George Bush and warned White House hopeful Barack Obama of the potential disillusionment if he secures the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.
As the US presidential election campaign intensifies, Penn told a press conference marking the opening of the Cannes Festival: "These are the most important elections in my life and probably in our history."
While stepping back from endorsing a candidate in the race for the White House, Penn said he was endorsing the hope that had been created by Obama's campaign for the election, which is set for November.
Penn heads the nine-strong jury for this year's key prizes at what is the world's leading film festival.
When asked why so many people disliked Bush, Penn said this was the case with someone who operates "without a brain and a heart" and kills thousands through wars.
It was not the first time that Penn, who is known for his vocal political activism, has roundly criticized the Bush and White House.
In recent years, he has visited Iran and placed an advertisement in the Washington Post attacking the Bush administration on Iraq and the war on terror.
While he acknowledged the sense of political inspiration that Obama had unleashed in the US as a result of his bid for the presidency, he warned him of the "dangerous disillusionment" that could set in if he successfully secured the Democratic nomination.

Having the right to speak your mind is guaranteed in this country(for now). Having the stones to do it is another altogether.
If more people had the balls to speak up, we wouldn’t be in the god awful mess we’re in right now.

Please elaborate on why Sean Penn is an idiot!!!. Speaking out against war does not fit my meaning or the meaning we teach our children of what an idiot is........words without meaning seem more idiotic..

Sean Penn shoould be listened to
Sean Penn is one of a handful of people in the US that says it like it is. If more people spoke up about the wrongs of the Bush administration the world would be a better place. Because so many Americans have been silent over the years the Bush administration just went from bad to worse. Penn got it right on Iraq long before it was invaded. His efforts to stop the war, which just about everybody now concedes was wrong, should be applauded. The fact that he and others like Martin Sheen jeopardised their careers to speak out says volumes for their courage.
