Jailed MPs punished for using cell phones

Bangladesh News.Net
Thursday 27th March, 2008 (IANS)

Four former Bangladesh MPs who were jailed on corruption charges have been stripped of their privileges for illegally using cell phones.

Their entitlements of a small cot, newspapers and other facilities were cancelled for three months after they were found to be using cell phones to contact their families and associates outside the jail, the Daily Star reported.

The prisoners whose entitlements were cancelled Wednesday are former Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) ministers Nazmul Huda, Altaf Hossain Choudhury and Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, and former Awami League minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir.

Former BNP lawmakers Mosaddek Ali Falu and Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu also lost their right to meet visitors for the same offence.

'The punitive measures were taken against them for their breaking the jail code two months ago. The jail authorities had filed cases against them for this but the court did not take cognisance of it. So the jail authorities took the actions that fall within their jurisdiction,' Inspector General (Prisons) Brig. Gen. Zakir Hassan said.
