Fiji military government uncovers coup plot
Bangladesh News.Net Monday 5th November, 2007
Police in Fiji have arrested 16 people in the past two days, after uncovering an alleged plot against the country's military leader, Frank Bainimarama.
Businessmen, politicians and former soldiers were among those arrested and charged.
Several other armed suspects are also expected to be rounded up and captured, with police and military in Fiji banding together for a search.
Among those charged are Fiji's former military land force commander, Colonel Jone Baledrokadroka, a former ally of Commodore Bainimarama until he was discharged for insubordination.
Also accused of treason was Fiji's former intelligence director Colonel Metuisela Mua, who served a prison term for his involvement in a George Speight-led 2000 coup.
New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark said one of those arrested, a New Zealander, had been badly beaten.
He is believed to be New Zealand businessman, Ballu Khan, who was allegedly so badly beaten he had a broken jaw and ribs.
Fiji's deposed prime minister Laisenia Qarase says he hopes the latest developments do not derail elections planned for March 2009. Email this story to a friend

Fiji military government uncovers coup plot
Military coups seem to be the latest fashion, and every body is getting in on the act, are they being stimulated by the warmongers to sell arms to these poor countries, who spend all of their money to buy arms instead of food to feed their population,
