Huge amount of fake Bangladeshi currency recovered in Tripura

Agartala, Apr 20 : A huge amount of fake Bangladeshi currency was recovered by the North Tripura Police while frisking a suspected person in Dharmanagar, 200 km north from here.

Uttam Mazumder, Superintendent of Police, North, told over telephone that one Santosh Das (20) was arrested with 829,000 Bangladesh Taka while he was coming towards the Dharmanagar market on Thursday.

The arrested youth, a resident of bordering Bokboki village in Dharmanagar sub-division, said during interrogation that the amount was handed over to him by one Jailal Mian to transit it to Dharmanagar market and for which he would get remuneration.

Police informed that based on prior information that a big amount of fake currency would move through the area and they laid a trap. When plaid a youth on suspect, they recovered the amount hidden in an inner pocket.

This is the second success of the North Tripura Police in a week. Earlier on April 14, one Abdul Rehaman (20) was arrested with fake Indian currency notes of rupees 50,000 from Kailasahar area.

Police informed that a racket of fake currency is very active in the region. And, after the rising of the barbed wire fencing in the entire border with Bangladesh, the section earlier involved in smuggling of goods and cattle is now turning towards fake notes and other valuable amount but of small size which can be easily smuggled despite of the fence.

The SP informed that the now the smugglers have take new strategy of smuggling. They are making small packets of profitable items like currency notes, marijuana and medicines and throw them above the fence at places where visibility is low. But despite of all efforts police and border guards are keeping a vigil and the rate of successful operations of the security forces are high.

Tripura which is surrounded by Bangladesh from three sides has a long border of 856 km of the total 4096 km border with that nation.
